Around this time last year, I had the honor of photographing a surprise proposal that still gives me chills when I think about it. It was a quiet, calm morning in Acadia National Park, and it couldn’t have been more beautiful. Ryan had reached out with a plan to propose to his partner, Riley during their yearly trip to Acadia, and he sent a dropped pin of the exact location he had in mind. I was immediately on board. My husband and I drove up the day before to scout the spot, walk the trail, and get a feel for the light, terrain, and the best possible angles.

That morning, the fog hung gently over the landscape, and everything felt calm, quiet, and intimate, like the world had paused just for them. As they arrived at the overlook, I was tucked away nearby with my camera, pretending to be another hiker taking in the view. Ryan took a deep breath, turned to her, and dropped to one knee. The reaction? Total surprise. Pure joy. Happy tears. And yes, she said YES. The moments that followed were filled with emotion, laughter, and that beautiful post proposal glow. It was real, unfiltered, and full of heart, exactly the kind of story I love to capture.

Planning a Surprise Proposal? My Top 5 Tips:

1. Plan, Research, and Trust
The best angles, lighting, and spots don’t just happen. My husband and I were able to scout the location ahead of time to make sure everything would go smoothly, but I know that’s not always feasible. If you can’t scout in person, do your best to research and plan. Study maps, read reviews, and look at photos to find the perfect spot. And even if I can’t visit the location beforehand, I’ll work closely with you to help choose the best timing and spots based on my experience and your vision.
2. Timing Matters (Even in the Morning!)
There’s something truly special about the soft morning light, the misty air, and the peacefulness of low crowds. For this couple, morning walks at their favorite place were deeply meaningful, so we planned the proposal to feel natural and personal to them. I always adapt to what’s special for each couple and do my best to recommend the best time of day to capture those moments. Whether that’s early morning, golden hour, or whatever feels right for your story.
3. Communication is Everything
Dropped pins, screenshots, wardrobe plans. When we’re coordinating a surprise, I’ll walk you through it all. I work closely with my couples so nothing gets missed, and you can focus on the big moment.
4. Keep It Simple & True to You
You don’t need elaborate props or over the top production. The best proposals are ones where your personalities and love take center stage. Trust the process, and I’ll be here to help you every step of the way.
5. Hire a Photographer Who Gets It
There’s a very delicate balance between capturing the moment and not ruining the surprise. I focus on blending in naturally, staying aware of the mood, and creating images that feel genuine, emotional, and timeless.
